NAMING NUCLEAR SUBMARINE AS INS ARIHANT IS IN BLATANT DISREGARD TO JAIN RELIGION SAYS MUNI SHRI TARUN SAGAR JI

Jain Muni Shri Tarun Sagarji Maharaj, presently holding his chaturmas at Nagpur, has recently expressed his deep sense of concern and displeasure, to a group of media correspondents on learning that the nuclear sub-marine recently developed indigenously, has been named as INS ARIHANT. Prime Minister, Shri Manmohan Singh had announced the name at the inauguration ceremony held on the 27th July, 2009. He mentioned that 'Arihant' is the most revered and respected word for the entire Jain community, which denotes the elimination of all sort of 'internal' enemies, like pride, anger, violence, attachment, emotions etc. According to Jain philosophy, Arihantha has been the propagator of "Live and let live" and non-violence concepts, meant not only Jain community but by the entire humanity. A submarine, which is used only for mass destruction just cannot be called as 'Arihant'. It would be entirely incorrect and ridiculous to do so.

PARASNATH ( MADHUBAN ) TO BE ON RAIL MAP, THANKS TO MAMTA BANERJEE
Giridih, Mamata Banerjee's budget proposals have brought the smiles back on the people of this district lacking a proper railway network despite being a hub of mineral wealth, industries and tourism. Mamata's proposal to ensure railway connectivity between Giridih and Madhuban, near Parasnath, has become the talking point of the town. In fact, Lalu Prasad had announced the new link in his interim budget. But Mamata, has included it in the final budget. Along with the new link - which is expected to be completed soon - the railway minister included Parasnath in her plan to develop multi-functional complexes in 50 stations nationally. Parasnath would also be developed as an ideal station with basic facilities such as drinking water, adequate toilets, catering services, waiting rooms and dormitories especially for lady passengers and better signage. Giridih, with a population of 20 lakh spread across 13 blocks, has major tourist hotspots, religious centres, mica, iron and steel industries, coal and iron ore deposits but lags behind in development because of poor railway connectivity in spite of having two railway stations - Giridih and Parasnath. Jains, may see a boost in pilgrim number after the link is made operational. "We thank Mamata for selecting Parasnath to be among 50 stations to be developed as a multi-functional complex with facilities of a shopping mall and other amenities," said Ashok Jain of the Digamber Jain Society.

MAHAVIR TEMPLE PATNA TO HAVE ITS TWIN IN HOUSTON
The famous Mahavir temple of Patna would now have its twin in Houston, US. This would be possible as several entrepreneurs and professionals living in the US, who have their origin in Bihar and its neighbouring states, have decided to build a Mahavir Temple there which would be identical to the Mahavir temple of Patna. These professionals have formed a Mahavir Mandir Construction Committee and the likely cost for constructing the temple would be $2 million. The construction will be completed in phases with likely time taken for completion of work being four years. The president of Mahavir Temple Construction Committee of North America has informed Mahavir Mandir Trust, Patna, secretary Acharya Kishore Kunal that the thought to have such a temple was explored by the committee members in the interest of preserving their culture and tradition and pass it on to the next generation. A press note issued by Acharya Kunal on Wednesday said that the committee members have also sought collaboration and guidance from the Mahavir Mandir Trust, Patna, for construction of temple in Houston, the capital city of Texas state of the US. They have also requested for a priest for the temple.

JAIN COMMUNITY MEMBERS TAKE STOCK OF GUJARAT TEMPLE REMAINS
Five days after the remains of an ancient temple were discovered on the SSG Hospital campus during construction work of a new building, members of Jain community visited the site to find out the origin of the structure.

After the discovery of the remains , the hospital authorities had written to the Archaeological Survey of India to take over the excavation of the site. When no action was taken in this regard for a few days, over 25 members of Shree Jain Yuvak Mahasang visited the place. The carving (found on the remains) is similar to the Jain derasar at various places. But we are not sure yet. Since the ASI has not taken any step, we will take help of our acharya and other saints to have a look at the remains and confirm its origin,” said Dipak Shah, general secretary of Shree Jain Yuvak Mahasang.

“The remains are lying there unprotected since it was excavated. No one is concerned about having a scientific explanation. The artifacts need to be preserved, as it can be of help to researchers and historians,” said Nayan Parikh, president of Shree Jain Yuvak Mahasang. Prima facie, the remains were assumed to be of Solanki temple constructed between 12th and 13th century.

JAIN TEMPLE AT VASAI, MUMBAI BURGLED
Cash and valuables were stolen from a Jain temple in Vasai (W), which is a stone's throw away from the deputy superintendent of police's office. The theft occurred after the temple had closed its doors in the evening. The police believe the thieves may have scaled a nearby tree that allowed them access to the temple's terrace. Most of the valuables were kept on the first floor of the temple. Stolen items included Silver ornaments and valuables worth including a crown and the donation box. Shantilal Shah, one of the trustees of the temple, reported the theft . This is the fifth time over the last 25 years that this temple has been looted, but no guard or watchman has been deployed in or around the compound, the police said.

CONFERENCES & SEMINARS

2009 JAINA CONVENTION - REPORT BY DILIP SHAH, PAST PRESEDENT JAINA
15th Biennial JAINA Convention was held at the Jain Center of Southern California’s from July 2nd to 5th at Jain Bhavan complex in Los Angeles. The complex is spread over 62,000 sq ft . Over 2500 community members attended the convention from world over. The Theme for the convention was “Ecology the Jain Way”. Care and concern of the environment is a deeply held doctrine of Jainsm from the very beginning because Jains have been told long long before the Science learned that Plants, Water, earth and Air has life and/or is home of countless lives and jains have reverence for all lives (not just of humans or animals). Therefore preservation of nature is a religious duty of everyone. At this convention, lectures and seminars were designed to encompass this theme and suggested ways to take care of the nature in these modern times. Attendees came from all over the USA and Canada, UK; Dubai and India. Of the 2500 attendees, 1000 were persons of age 30 or under. Many monks and scholars also reached from India . There were three keynote speakers all academicians. Dr. Gary Francione; Distinguished professor of Law and Ethics at the Rutgers University; Dr. Jagdish Sheth, Chair of Marketing at Emory University and Dr. Dipak Jain, Dean of the Kellog School of Management.

Dr. Gary Francione was not known to the Jain community before this convention. He is the first teacher in America to teach Animal rights. Both he and his wife are vegetarians for over 25 years and vegan for last 21 years. In his keynote address he called on the Jain community to consider how much Violence is committed on their behalf on animals - in modern day business of producing wool, leather or even a glass of Milk. His passionate address was most moving and he received a standing ovation by all and tears in the eyes of many. Dr. Jagdish Sheth emphasized “Nurturing the Nature” . He talked about sustainable growth can only be achieved by limiting our consumption (Jain Principle of APARIGRAH) and always being aware of where things we consume came from. Attempting to emphasis local and fresh products to minimize transportation as a way to help the environment. Dr. Dipak Jain talked about employing Jain principles in everyday business activities. His personal anecdotes were not just informative; they were also entertaining and funny.

The opening day morning was enthusiastically greeted by a procession in which scholars, monks, local politicians walked and young and old Shravks and Shravikas and children dancing with traditional music and huge colorful flags representing 67 member Jain centers was the colorful and uplifting auspicious beginning of the whole event. This JAINA initiative to connect all the Jain communities living in 36 countries outside of India was the second such conference at JAINA Convention – the first one was in 2007 at the previous convention in NJ. Late Dr. L. M. Singhavi chaired that meeting and gave it a blessing that has allowed this movement for unifying all the Jains all over the world. Plans are in the works to hold the 2010 JAIN DIASPORA meeting in London.

Many scholarly lectures were presented in English, Gujarati and Hindi on subjects like Pujya Shri Rakeshbhais lectures on ATMA SIDDHI and VACHANAMRUT, Acharya shri Chandanaji’s and Sadhvi Shubhamji’s Jain Dharma through Social Service; Essence of Human Life by Bhattarak Charukeertiji; Jain Customs by Pandit Abhay Kumarji and Pandit Dhirajbhai Mehta; Jain way of Raising Children by Gurudev Shri Chitrabhanuji; Jains: Pioneers of Ecology by Samani Vinaypragyaji; Essence of Forgiveness by Sadhvi Shilapiji……Punya- Paap by Falguni Zaveri, Path toward Moksha by Pramodaben Chitrabhanu.

Separate tracks were designed for youth by speakers like Saumil Mehta, Nipun Mehta, Pallavi Doshi, Ami Doshi Aakash Doshi Rajni Modi Sneha Patel and Aditi Shah. Traditional competition between Pathshala Children of various Jain Centers Known as JAINA ACADEMIC BOWL is heavily anticipated event by the young members of the community. This year the JAIN CENTER of NJ won that competition. The entertainment highlights included the world premiere of the play “Siddha Hem” based on the life of Acharya Hemchendra Charya and a Bollywood show “ Black” presented by 10 blind performers. There were fun activities for children and adults of different age groups which comprised cruises, dancing, treasure hunts, movies, stand up comedies and a mega mela at the hotel with 10 stalls for games. VEGETARIANISM

NAN - KULCHA - RUMALI ROTIARE NOT FOR VEGETARIANS - CHETAN JAIN
Having visited a very good restaurant in Suburban Mumbai, we ordered Jain Subzi along with combination of NAN & Roti. In a few seconds the managers of the restaurant who was known to me from many years approached me and requested me to cut NAN from our order as it was not a JAIN food, I inquired to him that how was that possible as it's only made of MAIDA. What he clarified with his professional ethics was just shocking, here are the details:-

1) NAN KULCHA & RUMALI ROTI CANNOT BE MADE WITHOUT EGG in it. It is absolutely impossible for any one to make them without egg in a hotel. It will not be that soft and elastic through out the day and shall start to crack in some time.

2) He also clarified that as been registered a Vegetarian Hotel he can't bring in eggs so the get the Atta made in ready form from local bakeries who prepare it for them and supply to all restaurants.

3) He also said that even thought all restaurants owners shall deny this but it is a fact and that others do not say it so as to not loose business. In fact they turn s blind eye on what the bakery wala adds to the atta mixture.

4) He also stated that he been experience for soo many years in as a restaurant manager in many hotels does not know any single outlet that could give you VEGETARIAN NAN, KULCHA or RUMALI ROTI.

5) He also stated that he now clarifies it to all his clients, as he feels that it is against his ethics to not provide details to the customer.

6) Only Plain Roti is the only item that a normal Vegeterian or a Jain can consume in a hotel.

All this stated above is 100% true. This information is not just for Jains but for all those who are truly Vegetarian.

AWARD OF PH.D. DEGREE TO PROF. SOHAN RAJ TATER
"The Jaina Doctrine of Karma and The Science of Genetics" -The degree of Ph.D. being awarded on 'The Jain Doctrine of Karma and the Science of the Genetics', a unique work containing the modern scientific ideas useful to the whole of the Jain community. Gene is an organ of our gross body where as karma is an organ of our subtlest body. Both of them are connected with body, the one with the gross body and the other with the subtlest body. Both of them are connected with body, the one with the gross body and the second with subtlest body. Death is related only to the gross body. The subtle body remains even after death. The body that has been termed as astral, karmic body in Jain philosophy, has been termed as sign body in sankhya philosophy. In the worldly state, they always live together Scientifically, all these things can be explained like this—according to scientists, there are four states of matter—solid, liquid, gas and plasma. One more state has been found out-proto-plasma. Spiritually speaking, protoplasm is our life force and it is a solid proof of our existence. Scientists believe that protoplasm is an immortal element. This chemical, that exists in our cells, gets separated from the body after death and gets scattered in the atmosphere. This protoplasma enters the genes of a child at the time of conception.

According to genetic science, very minute living beings, known as virus, are found on the earth. The moment they come in contact with a living media, their number increases infinitely. The creatures whose bodies are made up of one cell, known as bacterias. This bacteria has a nucleus that contains DNA. This DNA has got the characteristic of multiplying and that is why even this one-celled being too performs metabolism. The element responsible for multiplication is DNA and it is found in one-celled living beings also. The doctrine of karma conceives karma as constituting a very fine kind of matter aggregates. All living beings of world contain the same genetic codes. This research work bring forth the possibilities that the individual pudgalas (karmic particles or karma varga as) i.e. the karma create genes. Genes and karma both determine the life cycle and inheritance of all living beings. Genetic science says, "we are what because of our genes.

Tirthankaras have said since very beginning "we are what because of our karmas". Genes not only bear the genetic traits of their parents but these also represent the karma performed by individual. Karma body possibly controls the activities of the genes. With this research work the author has arrived at the conclusion that karmas are the cause and genes are their effect (fruits). Karmas direct, instruct, motivate genetic codes and genes to function and mutate accordingly. Explaining the concept of Karma as known to various Indian philosophies, including Jainism, the work it deals with the concept of life in Jaina philosophy, and goes on to describe the classification, bondage, fruition and annihilation of Karma. Further discussing the developments in genetic science, along with its important aspects, it presents a comparative study of Karma and genes and brings out the fact that Karmas are the cause and genes are their effects.

Religious leaders (from left) Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari, president, Jammat-e-Islami Hind, Acharya Lokesh Muni, and Dominic Emmanuel, Director, Delhi Catholic Archdiocese, outlining their stand on Section 377 in New Delhi

RELIGIOUS LEADERS CRITICISE DELHI HIGH COURT ORDER
NEW DELHI: Leaders of various religious groups described as “shocking, deplorable and unfortunate” the recent Delhi High Court judgment that decriminalised homosexuality. At a joint press conference, they said that in the wake of the judgment there were attempts by various quarters to encourage and popularise unnatural sexual behaviour and perversion. Such unhealthy attempts are totally unacceptable in a country which has rich cultural and ethical traditions. It is an undeniable fact that unnatural sex undermines the family system, corrupts the social atmosphere, leads to moral degradation and is injurious to health. The attempt to popularise unnatural inclination in the name of democratic rights is totally misguided, said a statement signed by Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari, president of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind; Shankaracharya Onkaranand; Father Dominic Emmanuel, spokesperson and Director Delhi Catholic Archdiocese; Acharya Lokesh Muni of Ahimsa Vishwa Bharati and Daljeet Singh of the Dharma Pracharak Committee of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee. It must be realised that the domain of individual rights cannot be extended to include unnatural tendencies and perversions. The individual rights, as is well-known, are not absolute but are subject to public order, morality and health. The social fabric cannot be permitted to be disrupted in the name of individual freedom,” they said.

Demanding that the government intervene in the matter and declare in clear terms that unnatural sex was “unacceptable” and “illegal,” the religious leaders said individuals prone to “perverted behaviours” needed counselling and treatment. They should not be harassed or victimised. Rather they should be given all possible help to overcome the unnatural tendencies. At the same time, such behaviour should not be legitimised. Announcing their decision to launch an all-India campaign against such tendencies, the religious leaders called upon the people who “believe in ethical, cultural and religious values” to stand up against a calculated effort by some groups to impose upon India the “corrupt” western value system to spoil the family system and social fabric of the country.

While there was unanimity among the religious leaders over the fact that homosexuality should not be legalised, Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari differed with others, saying such behaviour was a “sin” and punishable under Islam. The other leaders said that they did not treat people with such behaviour as outcastes but as part of society and were always willing to help them get into the mainstream through counseling. We cannot go against the laws of nature, Father Emmanuel said.

Some Religious leaders also passed a resolution denouncing the court ruling which decriminalized homosexual sex between consenting adults. The resolution, which states that homosexuality is a deviation from normal laws of nature and is not accepted in any religion, will be sent to the president, vice president and prime minister and request them to "protect our rich heritage and culture."

Acharya Sadhvi Sadhna, chairman of World Fellowship of Religions, told reporters "The judgement passed by the high court is against Indian culture. Homosexuality is not allowed by Indian culture. Foreigners want their children to follow our culture and traditions, and now we are deviating away from our rich culture. India is a leader of religions and we should not allow this to happen."

Acharya Lokesh Muniji said, "We urge the union and Delhi governments to keep in mind the views of various religious committees while taking a stand on the judgement of the Delhi High Court. It's not that we don't support independence of individuals but this judgment challenges the will of god. As a representative of a religious body, one of my greatest fears is that this judgment may act like a first step towards legalising homosexual marriages in India. This would be completely unacceptable by us."

Other religious leaders that signed the resolution seeking review of the court order include Kamal Farooqui, chairman of the Minorities Commission, Swami Raghuanandji (Hindu), Mahendir Singh (Sikh), Lama Lob Jang (Buddhist), and Maha Mantra Das (Hare Krishna).

In a statement issued by Secretary General of Jain Maha Sabha Delhi. Professor Ratan Jain said homosexuality is sign of sick mentality .This is unnatural and accepting this behaviors will degrade the society. This recognition will lead to new physical and mental diseases. He further said that for the luxury of handful people, we can not kill the Indian culture & traditions.

Inscription in Brahmi on a pillar fragment with octagonal shaft, which identifies the donor as the perfumer Hamgha and his family, Early 2 nd century AD

TAMIL BRAHMI INSCRIPTION THROWS LIGHT ON JAINISM
MADURAI A rare 3rd century B.C. Tamil Brahmi inscription found near Madurai recently has brought to light the fact that not only Pandyas and Cheras but the chiefs of the coastal region in the State also patronised Jainism in the early period. The discovery by a team of epigraphists, who undertook a survey at Arittapatti in Melur taluk, is a remarkable evidence of history of early Tamil politics, culture and language, State Archaeology department sources said here recently. The inscription was found engraved in a cave of a hillock, where early Jain monks stayed and preached their faith. It is just four feet away from another Brahmi inscription discovered by some scholars in 1971. All the evidence available so far makes clear that the Paravars were the chiefs of the coastal region and they ruled their areas as subordinates of the Pandyas of the Sangam age. The previously discovered Brahmi inscription at Arittapatti also mentions about a chief from Nelveli (now Tirunelveli region). The inscription throws light on the proximity the chiefs of Nelveli to the Pandyas of Madurai in the Sangam age. As many as 60 Tamil Brahmi inscriptions were found during the past over 100 years from 15 villages including, Mangualm, Anaimalai, Azhagarmalai, Tiruvadavur, Keezhavalavu, Tirupparankundram and Varichiyur.

KAMAL JAIN, THE CANADA-BASED NRI FOR RASH DRIVING
PUNE: A court rejected the prosecution's plea of extending the police custody remand of Kamal Jain, {65} the Canada-based NRI man and former CEO of a telecom major who tried to escape a parking fine of Rs. 100.00 injured a policeman and couple in the process. Instead, Jain was sent to magisterial custody for 15 days. Police produced Jain before the judicial magistrate and prayed that his police custody be extended for seven days. Public prosecutor pressed for Jain's custodial interrogation to ascertain the motive behind the incident. Kamal Jain's advocate pleaded that his client be sent to magisterial custody, since the police have not recovered anything from Jain's possession, despite keeping him in custody for over 50 hours, since his arrest. The Canadian national Kamal Jain, was arrested for driving while a policeman precariously perched on the bonnet of his car, was deported on July 3 for illegally working in India. Police had nabbed Jain after firing six bullets and puncturing the car’s tires. Jain was issued a ‘leave India’ notice by the government for illegally working here. He came to India on an ex visa, which allows him to stay in India, but not to work or do any consultancy services here.

COMMENTS FROM VIEWERS
From: Sanjay Jain - The article "Jainism in Bangladesh" in Ahimsa Times June 2009 Issue has erroneous information about the religion in the following extract: "The teaching of Parsvanatha is called Chaturayama. It outlines a four-fold path to salvation, i.e., kindness to all living beings, avoidance of telling lies, abjuration of theft and the possession of belongings. In the next step Mahavira added another. It was not to wear any dress. Thus the Jainas were divided into two sects. The followers of Parsvanatha are called Shvetamvara, those who wear white clothes, while the followers of Mahavira are called Digamvara, which means nude (literally, the sky is the cover)."

I understand Bhagwan Mahavir added brahmcharya vrat and not "not to wear any dress." Both Shvetambars and Digambars revere Parsvanatha and Mahavir as they do the other 22 tirthankars. Perhaps the article is quoting some other source. If so, I humbly suggest that the source should have been identified and the error should have been brought to the attention of the source writer and the readers.

From Gaurav - SANDHARA (SALLEHKHANA) AGAIN QUESTIONED BY THE PEOPLE
On 23 may 2009, India t.v.,a news channel broadcasted a phone talk between a Jain monk & a lawyer from Rajasthan. The lawyer has filed a petition against the sandhara (SALLEHKHANA) practice of Jainism in the Rajasthan high court. He claims that sandhara is nothing but a way off suicide. Later he says that when sati is abolished then why sandhara is not stopped? From this it becomes clear that he has wrong feeling towards Jainism. (See he does not want to stop it as a social cause but since sati is abolished sandhara should also be , which clears his intentions and cause of protest.). Though sandhara is practiced all over India by all the sects of Jainism but this news channel targeted shewtamber jains specifically. During this broadcast the channel addresses" dekhiya muat ka yai tamasha" Even after Jain monk on phone explained its importance in spirituality, the Lawer compared it to sati pratha. REGRETS

In December 2008, we had received from one of our readers, some information about Sanatan Sanstha, Goa, a voluntary service organization. Presuming that the same could be true, it was placed in the December issue of Ahimsa Times. We were informed about this erroneous information by the executives / members of Sanatan Sansthan and we realized the errors & omissions. Immediately the objected subject / contents were removed from the news letter. While deeply regretting and apologising for the inadvertent error, we assure every one that, we never had the intention to hurt anyone or judge any one. On the contrary, we feel that institution like Sanatan Sansthan are doing a great job for the nation as a whole and making us live with pride. We wish Sanatan Sansthan and all its constituents all the success in their endeavor to serve the cause of humanity. -- Ahimsa Times.

SANATAN SANSTHA, A COMMENDABLE INSTITUTION
Sanatan Sanstha is a Voluntary Organisation working at the grass root level of society. The name Sanatan was specially chosen as it means eternally new. And so just as its name suggests, the mission or the objective of the organisation are to make society aware of its present limitations and inculcate in Society true ethical and spiritual values and do charitable work for the society.

Activities of the Sanstha  : 1) Discourses : To acquaint people with the science of Spirituality and spiritual practice (sadhana), the organization conducts discourses free of charge at more than a thousand venues in India and abroad in various languages. In these discourses guidance is provided about the misconceptions regarding Spirituality, what is the exact nature of spiritual practice, what are the paths of spiritual practice, which is the appropriate spiritual practice, which is the most superior spiritual practice for today's times, i.e., for Kaliyug, etc. After the discourses, there is a question-answer session for clarification of doubts.

2) Weekly Spiritual Meetings (satsangs) : To motivate aspirants and seekers for pursuing spiritual practice and also to help maintain continuity in their spiritual practice, the organization conducts free weekly satsangs in different places. In these gatherings, theoretical information about the various topics in Spirituality is provided; emphasis is laid on clarifying a seeker's doubts and providing guidance about the seeker's individual spiritual practice as well as the further stages in spiritual practice – chanting, service and sacrifice.

3) Child Guidance Class (Balsanskarvarga) : Inculcating desirable values at a tender age helps the child to develop into a well-balanced personality. Teaching children to do spiritual practice, helps in fostering these values. In fulfilling this objective, the significance of spiritual practice is explained in very simple language to children attending these classes.

Sanstha distrubutes notebooks and textbook to the needy & poor students.

4) Workshops on Spirituality : Workshops are organised for aspirants desirous of further study and for seekers conducting satsangs. Generally, the duration of these workshops is 4-5 hours; they involve a detailed study of topics related to Spirituality.

5) Workshops on Stress Management : These are conducted in government institutions, corporate houses, industries, etc., for the promotion of managerial and organizational health of the institution.

For our young adults in colleges and training institutes the Sanstha conducts courses in Leadership and Personality Development. All the above programmes are conducted without any fees.

6) Rallies : To create awareness about Spirituality amongst the people, rallies are organized. To find out if there are any Rallies around your area, please e-mail us at sanatangoa@sanatan.org

7) Relief Measures in Calamities, Training in First Aid and Fire Fighting : Man's life may be threatened by natural calamities like floods, cyclones, earthquakes, war and anarchical situations. In such situations many a time government machinery fails to provide adequate relief to citizens. To remedy this, Sanatan has begun training courses in relief measures during calamities and first aid for citizens, free of charge.

With this objective and the present state of unrest and terror in society the Sanstha has started a programme of making society aware of what they should do in disaster or a Disaster Management programme. In this programme is included training Self- Defense, Fire- Fighting, and First-Aid.

Sanstha Conducts Free Medical Camps, distributes cloths & garments for the needy & poor people through out Maharastra

8) Appropriate Campaigns to Create Awareness of Righteousness (Dharma) and Nation Building : With a view to create awareness of Righteousness and for nation building, campaigns are being launched through various media against malpractices occurring in society, e.g., malpractices occurring during religious festivals, denigrating deities through use of their pictures in advertisements, etc. Henceforth such campaigns will be carried out during all religious festivals and appropriate information will be provided from a religious and spiritual point of view.

9) Newspapers : The Sanatan Prabhat is published as a daily, weekly and monthly in various Indian languages including Marathi, Hindi, Gujaratri, and Kannada as well as an English Monthly.

DIKSHA NEWS
DIGAMBAR JAIN 'ARYIKA' DIKSHA FESTIVAL AT KUNDALPUR
Jain pilgrimage destination Kundalpur where the Jain temples have been built on the surrounding hills is a divine and peaceful place for a Diksha Ceremony. Recently there was a Diksha Ceremony where fifty women embraced the Jain mother positions. They swore celibacy and renounced possessions. The ceremony took place in a huge tent, filled with thousands of Digamber Jain followers. The Jain Mothers, called 'Aryikas' wear white saris and the part of the sari covering their heads has blood spots. The Jain saints and Aryikas have shaved heads. They use their own hands to pull their hair out. The ceremony was attended by over eighty Digambar saints and also.

CHILD DIKSHAS CASE ADMITTED IN MUMBAI HIGH COURT
The Mumbai High Court has admitted a petition filed in a case of bal-diksha where in the Indore- based parents had challenged the power of the Child Welfare Committee to look into the life of a sadhvi. A bench of Justices, D K D Deshmukh and R. S. Mohite, while hearing the arguments, indicated the possibility of making compulsory the appointment of a guardian for such bal-dikshas. "We may make it necessary for a district judge to appoint a guardian for every minor who takes diksha '' observed Justice Deshmukh. At one point, Justice Mohite seemed unhappy with the fate that greeted bal dikshas. Senior counsel Rafiq Dada, assisted by advocate Sanjay Jain, said the court could not interfere with the age-old practice of diksha and the sentiments of entire Jain community.

An NGO had complained to the CWC, which had opined that the bal-dikshas required better looking after. But the parents said their daughter had chosen to take diksha on her own and no one else could intervene in the age-old tradition followed by the Jain community. The court had appointed a panel to interview the child, who had accepted diksha, NGO counsel Mihir Desai said. A report submitted to the court held that the six-year-old's diksha was "clearly a decision taken for her without thinking about the consequences'' and "not in her best interests''.

VEGETARIANISM : RECOMMENDED IN VEDIC SCRIPTURE - BY STEPHEN KNAPP
Many times there seems to be some confusion or lack of clarity on whether the Vedic path condones or condemns the eating of meat. Often times I hear Indians and followers of the Vedic path explain that meat eating is all right, that the Vedic *shastras* do not condemn it. Of course, in this day and age meat eating includes and supports the whole meat industry, which is the systematic slaughter of thousands of animals on a daily basis. But if we actually research the Vedic texts we will find that there are numerous references in the various portions of the Vedic literature which explain in no uncertain terms the karmic dangers of meat-eating and unnecessary animal slaughter. These indicate that meat eating should be given up for one’s spiritual and even material progress. This means that the Vedic conclusions that some people present for meat-eating are not accurate, and that they have never studied their own religious books very thoroughly. This is something that is important to understand.

NEW BOOKS ON JAINISM
Jainism: A Pictorial Guide To The Religion Of Non-Violence - By Kurt Titze , Published in Delhi, India, 1998; 280 pages, 11"x9", 325 photographs, 50 in color, fine art paper. All parents wish to introduce their children to their religion and culture. In their heart of hearts, they yearn that their sons and daughters should enjoy and appreciate the qualities and traits that characterize their religious beliefs. We Jains living in this part of the world are no exception. We have seen and experienced Jainism in India. We have a strong desire to communicate our experiences to our youngsters who are growing up in this country. We ourselves would like to know more about the various places of pilgrimage, Jain images, scholarly monks, and traditions. However, we have limited resources; in particular, time. This book, 'Jainism: A Pictorial Guide To The Religion Of Non-violence' will greatly help us in this respect.

Writing "About This Book," the author states, "Again and again, while frequenting those remote places of religious worship, the wanderer will be fascinated by the sight of turrets, cupolas and lofty spires crowning a mountain range or lying nestled in the lap of mother earth. Whether it is a large stone-image of a Jina on the wayside bearing the marks of many a century, or a row of Tirthankaras chiselled into a huge boulder which suddenly comes into view around a corner, the beholder will for longer than just a fleeting moment be in accordance with the Jaina saints of old who crisscrossed this vast subcontinent barefooted for the sole purpose of keeping a faith alive that teaches, more so than any other religion, reverence to all that lives &endash; humans, animals, plants. The Jaina saints of today are still following that path." This sums up the main import of the book.

The book presents pictorial accounts of places of Jain pilgrimage in Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Central India, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Bihar. These are interspersed with articles on Jainism, Jain art and architecture, Jain symbols and mantras, and social traditions by scholars like Dr. Klaus Bruhn, Dr. Jyoti Prasad Jain, Dr. Noel King, and Dr. Vilas Sanghave. Photographs with appropriate captions of various scholarly monks and nuns are also included. The pictures of Jain idols and of other exquisite monuments of architecture and sculpture constitute the highlights of the book. ' From: "MANISH MODI, E-Mail: manishymodi@gmail.com

SAD DEMISE

A YOUNG JAIN ESTABLISHES NEW TRAIL FOR THE JAIN WAY OF LIFE IN SOCIETY
Pranay Jain, an architect by profession and was working with Spectral Services, Noida as a Project Manager, was a LEED (Leadership in energy & environmental development) AP Certified Green Building Consultant. Candidly speaking, green environment is a buzz word and is most sought after technology and terminology for the professionals and common person. He secured his Masters of Technology in Construction and Project Management from Center for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT), Ahmedabad befitting all the ordeals of life which a common citizen faces in his life. The man of high values and with a missionary zeal to see his country as clean as any Developed economy launched a one man Army expedition for Environmental Sustainability in constructions industry.

However, Nature, at times, plays truants of her own and gave a lotus period to prove his mettle. The old time member of Young Jains, Delhi was known for the principles relating to the viability and co-existence with nature. He constantly taught people about the ill effects of using non-organic packaging products, and provided alternatives for the economic and environmental benefits. All great and pure souls are gifted with Anticipation trait and so was it with before the almighty final call i.e. death Pranay died due to brain hemorrhage at the age of 27 years on 5th July 2009 at Delhi. Being, an ardent supporter of the organ donation campaign and was planning to organize an eye donation camp in his last times. This was the utmost coveted donation from his side that even after getting a stroke he decided to donate his entire body parts while on the hospital bed. He donated his all body organs to needy including Eyes, Heart, Lungs, Liver, Kidneys, Bone marrow, parts of stomach and the like. He will remain an unsung hero for all of us who inspite of his pain and sufferings thought of helping others so that at least a few lives can be changed forever. His last words to his mother were “I have to go and U will cry! I know, but at least some other mothers can laugh and joy as my organs can make their children alive”.

Young Jains team salutes the hero who will live in our hearts forever. We pray to Jinendra Dev that he can get a good gati. Jai Jinendra !!
