" Those we love remain with us, For love itself lives on,
Cherished memories never fade, Because a loved one's gone.
Those we love can never be, More than a thought apart,
For as long as there is memory, They'll live on in our heart."

Sri Sathya Sai Baba has rendered service through numerous social,
educational institutions and hospitals for half a century to the common person.
We are saddened by the passing away of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the respected spiritual leader.
We convey our condolences and prayers to all the followers, devotees and admirers of the late spiritual leader.
His demise is a great loss for humanity.

(MESSAGE SENT TO AHIMSA TIMES) : India is the land of Lord Ram, Lord Mahavira, Lord Buddha, Saint Kabira, Saint Raidass, Svami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi. This land is known for its culture of renunciation and austerity, simplicity and magnanimity. But series of recent revelations of scams, each surpassing one another has stunned not only Indians but the whole world. Is this the fate of a great nation where doctrine of non- possession (aparigraha) and non- stealing (asteya) determined the course of our life. Thousands of our ancestors sacrificed their lives so that we can take breath in free and fair India. Common man of India is at a loss to understand what has happened to our great ideals which have been guiding force from decades. Have they got into oblivion?

This is the crux of the problem. Modern society is passing through the period of transition. Old ideals are losing their relevance and new ones have yet not established. Today, the dictums like “nothing succeeds like success”, “end justifies the man” outcome of sheer materialistic attitude, are ruling the roast. We are after money and power. For the most of us welfare of the society and nation has touched the bottom among the list of our priorities. Well being of our fellow citizens and pride for the nation has almost vanished from our agenda. To achieve our objective we are prepared to go to any extent. The corruption has eroded the very foundation of India.

Only silver lining amidst the dark clouds is that common people-Janata janardana has awakened against corruption. The citizens of India are in no mood to tolerate this corruption any more. Fortunately, masses of India has found their voice in staunch supporter of the Father of nation Mahatma Gandhi, Mr. Anna Hajare.

The path shown by our great Seers (Jinas) is the only resort in this alarming situation. We have to fight against corruption at all level. It has crippled every walk of life. If we fight the corruption with three yogas (activities--mental, vocal and physical) and with three karanas (dispositions) that is not to engage one self in corruption, not make others engage in corruption and not to endorse other’s act of corruption only then we can hope to get rid of this sinister problem. We have to put check on our desire of accumulating unlimited wealth and resort to honest means of earning. For this purpose, doctrines of Non- possession and Non- stealing are to be observed by every citizen of India. Lord Mahavira has also preached among Ten dharmas (duties) of a man, Samaj dharma and Rastra dharma that is duty towards society and nation. If we religiously follow our duties towards society and nation the phenomenon of corruption cannot last for long. Within no time we will be able to redeem the lost glory of India. We will fulfil our desire to make an India which every citizen would be proud of. E-Mail:

Grand processions, offerings to the poor and religious discourses marked the birthday celebrations of Lord Mahavir. Functions were held at many places to pay tributes to the last of the 24 Tirthankaras, who preached non-violence and tolerance nearly 2,600 years ago. Jain temples were adorned with flags as all sections of the community took part in processions on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti. Jains also made offerings of milk, rice, fruits, lamps and water to the poor, as lectures were organised to preach the path of virtue to mark the day. In the morning, the statue of Lord Mahavir, who taught the world the essence of life, was given a ceremonial bath called 'abhishek' symbolising the purity of mind and body. Pilgrims from across the country visited ancient Jain temples at Pawapuri in Bihar and Parasnath in Jharkhand on the auspicious occasion. As the last Thirthankar, Lord Mahavir revitalised the Jain order and is one of the most important figures of Jainism.

Addressing a gathering in the national capital, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit commended the Jain community in promoting austerity and simplicity at weddings and in combating the evil of female foeticide. President Pratibha Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh greeted the people on the occasion saying "Lord Mahavir's teachings are relevant at all times to ensure peace and happiness through spiritual excellence". Similar celebrations were performed in many other cities and towns in the country and in other countries where Jains have a sizeable population.

Bhagwän Mahävir's teachings of Ahimsa made Mahatma Gandhi who in turn made Martin Luther King and many Peace Activists throughout the world. Prof. Gary Francione, distinguished Professor of Law and Philosophy at Rutgers University in New Jersey has written this short but very timely essay: "The Birth of the Spiritual Leader Who Gave us Ahimsa".

THE BIRTH OF THE SPIRITUAL LEADER WHO GAVE US AHIMSA - Gary L. Francione, Professor, Rutgers University.

Although many are aware of the Buddha or the deities of Hinduism, few of us know anything about Mahavir (599-527 BCE), whose birth the Jain community around the world will celebrate on April 16. This celebration is known as Mahavir Jayanti. Jainism, along with Hinduism and Buddhism, are the three primary spiritual traditions of India, and archeological evidence indicates that although Mahavir was a contemporary of the Buddha, Jainism predated Mahavir by hundreds of years and, therefore, is the oldest religion in India. Mahavir is considered to be the last in a line of what the Jains call “Tirthankaras,” which literally means “maker of a ford” and refers to a human being who achieves omniscience and then teaches the path to liberation to others, thereby establishing a ford across the river of rebirth. A Tirthankara is also referred to as a “Jina,” which means “spiritual victor,” or as an “Arihant,” which means “destroyer of enemies.” A Jina or Arihant is a victor or destroyer in that he or she has conquered inner emotions and passions, and has complete equanimity that is characterized by an absence of attachment and aversion.

Mahavir was a social revolutionary. He rejected the caste system and the sexism that pervaded the society of his time (and that unfortunately persists), and promoted a radical social justice movement based on complete equality and equal inherent value. He did not limit this revolution to humans and was the first historical figure to regard all nonhuman animals as full members of the moral community. He was also the first historical figure to articulate the view that the planet itself, including air, water, and earth, consists of living systems. Mahavir was, indeed, the first ecologist.

The notion of revolution is often connected with violence, particularly in modern times. The central feature of Mahävir's revolution, however, was Ahimsa, or nonviolence. Mahavir provided the most expansive concept of Ahimsa that the world has ever known not only by extending this notion to include all living beings, but by making clear that violence was not simply a matter of what we did, but what we thought and said. Mahavir also taught us about two other central tenets of Jainism:
· Anekäntaväda or the notion that truth is many-sided
· Aparigraha or non-possessiveness.

These two principles cannot be understood except as aspects of Ahimsa. The doctrine of Anekäntaväda serves to promote social harmony and to reduce the violence that results from absolutist views of truth. The doctrine of Aparigraha recognizes that attachment to wealth and the accumulation of material things makes us more inclined to act in violent and destructive ways. Mahävir taught that.

“All breathing, existing, living, sentient creatures should not be slain, nor treated with violence, nor abused, nor tormented, nor driven away.” Ächäränga Sutra.

This is the only moral or spiritual principle that we need to know. If we live by this principle, we will be at peace with ourselves and the world will be at peace. Whatever our religious tradition may be, let us celebrate Mahavir Jayanti 2011 by recommitting ourselves to a simple but profound idea that all may embrace: Ahimsa. On 26th March, Smt. Sheila Dikshit, the senior Congress Leader and Chief Minister of Delhi invited about 200 distinguished members of Jain Community at her residence to celebrate Mahaveer Jayanti. In fact, it is a long established tradition for the Chief Minster to host a dinner for the community on the occasion of Mahaveer Jayanti.

The programme which was followed by sumptuous dinner was attended by the representative of all the sects. To name a few Chakresh Jain, Nirmal Sethi, Dr. D. C. Jain of Digamber Samaj, Subhash Oswal, Naren Bhikhuram Jain, Anil Jain of Sthanakwasi Samaj, Mangilal Sethia of Terapanth Samaj, Rajkumar Jain from Mandir Marg Sect etc. attended the programme. CM in her address praised Bhagwan Mahaveer and said Bhagwan Mahaveer philosophy is much more relevant today. She also said that, Mahaveer was probably the first environmentalist in the world who had foreseen the future. Jains presented a good show by coming together and thanking Mrs Dikshit for organising the event. The leaders presented the community in great esteem by reminding CM that, they are small in numbers but, in India, they are most educated, affluent and strong force.

After reminding the CM about the riches and prosperity in the community, our leaders requested the CM to give a donation of Rs. 2.00 crore, which is lying in the Government treasury since 2006. The leaders also said, in view of escalation in prices the donation may be increased from 2.00 crores to probably 20.00 crores. CM in her response to donation request very diplomatically suggested our leaders to come forward with appropriate projects, so that, she can deliver the money for the welfare of the community. ( She know all the four sects of Jains can never concur on a single project ). The question is, whether Jain Community, actually needs money from the Government for running their institutions or projects ? Are we really affluent and strong? How we should project our community without conflicts? What message is delivered to outside world by such requests of our leaders? Can we learn something from the Jews of United States? We Jains must have a national policy to brand our community as a strong force to reckon. We are capable of helping others. We don't need other's support.

Jainism started spreading its tentacles outside India in the middle of 19th century. However its traces could be found there even in the early period. it is found that Auradhapura a place of pilgrimage in Srilanka islands and an abode of Buddhism with viharas, was also a place of Jaina Basadis. Further Janakapuri (Mithilanagari) in Nepal were historically the birth place of Bhagawan Sri Neminatha and Sri Mallinatha, the 22nd and 19th Tirthankaras and thus possibly was the bed of Jainism. Sri Vishvambaranatha Pandyae who was the governor of Orissa has mentioned Leningrad and Tashkent in Russia showed the heritage of Jainism. Jain saint Muni Manibhadra visited Tashkent. A Jain idol belonging to the 16-17th century was found during excavation in a place called Astrakan near caspian sea of Soviet Union. Dukobarsi, an ethnological group in Russia in 18th century were known for following the principles of Jainism (Peace and Non Violence). It is said that Jainism was found in specks in Egypt - Babylon, Alexandria and Greece. The idols, inscriptions, copper plates and picturesque documentations narrating the heritage of Jainism are found in the museums of Switzerland, East Germany, England, America and Denmark. The ardent followers of Jainism (Digambara, Swethambara, Sthanikavasi, Terapanthi and Oswal) have constructed many temples in Afro-Asian and European countries in the recent past. Kenya, Japan, Canada, West Germany, Britain, Singapore and America. The beckon of ahimsa and the axioms of Jaina principles have spread all over the globe striving for the cause of humanity. A few idols of Jaina tirthankaras belonging to the 13th century and the medieval period are foud in thr museum at Copenhagen. There are a few fragments of many beautiful sculptors belonging to Halebid, the capital of Hoysala kings in Karnataka. The idols of lord Mahavira in Kayotsarga and padmasana postures and also of Chouvisa Tirthankaras are found in the museum.

In the year 1980, the Jains in Europe purchased a church and converted it into a Jain temple with the blessings of Chitrabhanu Ji and the pratishta mahotsav of this temple was held in the year 1988 from July 17th to July 23rd under the presence of His Holiness Sri Charukeerthi Bhattarakha Maharaj of Shravanabelagola. This temple has the idol of Bhagawan Chandraprabha as the main deity. We can also find a ten feet high idols of Bhagawan Bahubali in the Kayotsarga, goddess Padmavathi and other Jain idols in this temple. We can also find three sanctum sanctorum's dedicated to the Swethambara sect in the premises of this temple. A big hall, a school and a library can also be found in the temple premises. Some of the prominent Jain temples in U.K. are.

According to reports appearing in the press and media, Raman Baria, a resident of Ochhi Falia in Shivrajpur village in Pavagadh, had lodged an FIR stating that his daughter, aged 15, was kidnapped and subjected to physical violence after her deeksha to become a Jain nun. Baria had accused another Jain nun, Nirmla Prabha and her driver Pappu along with Mahendra, Ashok and Mukesh, of involvement in the incident. The FIR states that the girl was mal-treated in Falna. Soon after the FIR in the case was lodged with Pavagadh police station, it was decided to transfer the case to the Rajasthan police as the offence had taken place in that state. Panchmahals DSP, JR Muthalia, had claimed that the case had been forwarded to Falna (Rajasthan) police station for investigation as the crime had taken place there. Initially, Falna police denied receiving any official intimation about the case. They said whatever they had come to know about the incident was through media reports originating in Gujarat. However, later, Rajasthan Police at Khivanda police thana in Pali district registered the case against the said five persons, including sadhwi Nirmal Prabha and the matter is under investigation.

The Indian ambassador to Ivory Coast along with other officials were safely evacuated in Abidjan. The diplomatic area where the residence of the Indian ambassador Shamma Jain and other ambassadors are located had seen intense fighting over the past few days between the loyalists of Alsanne Ouattaro, the internationally recognized president, and Laurent Gbagbo, who has refused to quit the post even after losing the November 2010 elections.India had requested the French government to rescue the envoy and her staffers as they have ground forces in Abidjan. Jain's house, which was also damaged in the fighting, was situated in the area which is very close to the presidential compound that has been bombed by French forces.

More than 15,000 people in the city participated in a signature campaign against animal slaughter at the biggest slaughterhouse of Mumbai, Deonar, on the occasion of the 2610th birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir. The campaign was organised at Sonyamaruti Chowk, by the Jain Social Group Pune. More than 15,000 people signed the 500-foot canvas registering their protest against the slaughterhouse. Suhas Ramanlal Shah, president of the organisation, said we have launched a protest against the renovation of this slaughterhouse where modern machinery will be installed to increase the capacity of slaughtering more animals in a day. At present, more than 300 animals are slaughtered every day at the slaughterhouse and after installing modern machines this number will increase up to 15,000, which is unacceptable. We believe in the sayings of Bhagwan Mahavir and walk on the path of non-violence, which is why the whole Jain community has opposed this development, he added. PUNE: Judicial magistrate first class Swarup Bose directed former minister Suresh Jain to appear before the court on May 16 in a defamation case filed against him by social activist Anna Hazare. The direction were issued after Hazare's lawyer, Milind Pawar, filed a plea to issue a non-bailable warrant against Jain in order to secure his presence before the court for trial. Hazare had filed a case against Jain in 2003. The trial has been protracted for a considerable period as Jain has not attended proceedings on three to four occasions. The magistrate, on a plea, also granted exemption to Hazare for not attending the hearing as he was not well and suffering from weakness. Jain's lawyer, S K Jain, said that his client could not attend the proceeding as he was attending the assembly session in Mumbai. He further said that the complainant has not produced a witness in the case for conducting the hearing. He pleaded that his client (Jain) be exempt from attending the hearing. The court then directed Jain to remain present on May 16. Hazare had filed a case under section 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code against Jain on June 23, 2003, asking Jain to prove his allegation that he (Hazare) had defrauded a bank to the tune of Rs 75 lakh. Jain had levelled "imaginary and ill-motivated charges" against him (Hazare) intending to damage his reputation, Hazare had said in his plaint.

Director of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Lucknow and an eminent Cancer Specialist, Professor Dr. M. C. Pant, who has been honoured earlier with 'Padamshree' announced at a medical conference that use of pan masala was very harmful and was prone to occurrence of Cancer, irrespective of whether it contained tobacco or not. He added that a chemical called Gambium is used in the production of 'kattha', which is an essential constituent in all brands of Paan Maala and Gutka. The risk of cancer is doubled when kattha is mixed with tobacco. Dr. Pant mentioned that among male patients, about 40% cases are caused by the use of tobacco while 99% of them are found to have mouth or throat cancer.

Tobacco happens to contain more than 2000 chemicals, out of which more than 150 can produce cancer. Use of alcohol further aggravates the matter in giving rise to incidence of throat or mouth cancer. The harmful constituents in tobacco get dissolved in alcohol and are easily absorbed by the blood vessels. To what extent the tobacco could harm the body also depends on one's genes. The number of deaths occurring year after year by cancer alone is a matter of grave concern and there is a strong demand from all over the country to impose a ban on the production and use of tobacco. Member of parliament, Ms. Sushma Swaraj has come forward to take up the cause of cancer patients. She has recently met around 50 M. P.'s to fetch their support in getting the ban imposed as early as possible. She is reportedly raised the matter in Lok Sabha also. Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi of Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital is also supporting the move to get the ban on tobacco. Supreme Court is also likely to hear the case soon for imposition of the ban. AHIMSA TIMES requests your support to all the activists in this field.

Introduction : Recent times have seen an increase in the incidence of cancer. This is mainly attributed to urbanization, industrialization, lifestyle changes, population growth and increased life span (in turn leading to an increase in the elderly population). In India, the life expectancy at birth has steadily risen from 45 years in 1971 to 62 years in 1991, indicating a shift in the demographic profile.1 It is estimated that life expectancy of the Indian population will increase to 70 years by 2021–25.2 This has caused a paradigm shift in the disease pattern from communicable diseases to non-communicable diseases like cancer, diabetes and hypertension.

Burden caused by Cancer : Cancer is a group of diseases with similar characteristics, which can occur in all living cells in the body and different cancer types have different natural history. The myth that cancer affects people mostly in the developed countries is being broken by the fact that, of the 10 million new cancer cases seen each year worldwide, nearly 5.5 million are in the less developed countries. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the developed world and a similar trend has emerged in the developing countries too.3.

Cancer prevalence in India is estimated to be around 2.5 million, with over 8,00,000 new cases and 5,50,000 deaths occurring each year due to this disease.4 More than 70% of the cases report for diagnostic and treatment services in the advanced stages of the disease, which has lead to a poor survival and high mortality rate 5. The impact of cancer is far greater than mere numbers. Its diagnosis causes immense emotional trauma and its treatment, a major economical burden, especially in a developing country like India.

The initial diagnosis of cancer is perceived by many patients as a grave event, with more than one-third of them suffering from anxiety and depression. Cancer is equally distressing for the family as well. It could greatly affect both the family’s daily functioning and economic situation. The economic shock often includes both the loss of income and the increase of expenses because of the treatment and health care. This disease is associated with a lot of fear and despair in the country.

Distribution of Various types Cancers across the Subcontinent Among men, lung, esophagus, stomach, oral and pharyngeal cancers are more prevalent, while in women, cancers of cervix and breast are most common, followed by those of stomach and esophagus. Different cancers occur in different states of our country.6–8.

1. Esophageal cancers: Southern states of India like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and also in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
2. Stomach cancers: Southern India with the highest incidence in Chennai.
3. Oral cancers: Kerala (South India)
4. Pharyngeal cancers: Mumbai (Western India)
5. Thyroid cancers among women: Kerala
6. Gall bladder cancer: Northern India, particularly in Delhi and West Bengal.

Trends in Incidence of Cancer in India : A trend analysis of the data on cancer incidence for the period 1964–96 has demonstrated that the overall occurrence of cancer is increasing with among females. The greatest increase among females was for cancer of the breast and among males for cancer of the prostate. There was an increasing trend for lymphoma, urinary bladder, gall bladder and brain tumors in both sexes. Cancer of the colon was increasing in females and that of the kidney in males. Esophageal and stomach cancers were decreasing in both sexes. Cervical cancer showed a decreasing trend.9.Risk Factors : According to epidemiological studies, 80-90% of all cancers are due to environmental factors of which, lifestyle related factors are the most important and preventable.10 The major risk factors for cancer are tobacco, alcohol consumption, infections, dietary habits and behavioral factors. Tobacco consumption, either by way of chewing or smoking accounts for 50% of all cancers in men. Dietary practices, reproductive and sexual practices account for 20-30% of cancers. Studies have shown that appropriate changes in lifestyle will reduce the mortality and morbidity caused to cancer11. This offers the prospect for initiating primary and secondary prevention measures for control and prevention of cancers.12.
Cancer Control in India : India is one of the first few developing countries where a nation-wide cancer control programs were launched. Government of India took its first initiative in 1971. The National Cancer Control Program for India was formulated in 1984 with four major goals 13:
1. Primary prevention of tobacco related cancer
2. Early detection of the cancers of easily accessible sites
3. Augmentation of treatment facilities
4. Establishment of equitable, pain control and palliative care network throughout the country
Cancer Prevention : According to Mayo Clinic, there are 7 steps to prevent cancer.14 Avoid.
Tobacco use: As already discussed, tobacco is the major risk factor for cancer. Hence, it is important to avoid tobacco in all forms, like both active and passive smoking and chewing tobacco. Concerted efforts are being made to pass a bill in the Parliament for imposing a complete ban on the production and use of tobacco and tobacco products. Many N.G.O.'s and other humanitarian institutions have taken up this issue and hopefully the Bill will be passed soon inspite of the opposition fom tobacco industry.
Eat a variety of healthy foods: It is important to consume plant-based foods, rich in fruits and vegetables, reduce the intake of fat and alcohol.
Stay active and maintain a healthy weight: Regular exercise should be an integral part of one’s daily routine.
Protect yourself from the sun: Exposure to sun is the major cause of skin cancer. It is important to avoid the sun’s ultraviolet rays, especially from 10 am to 4 pm and applying adequate amounts of sunscreen lotion with a sun-protecting factor (SPF) of at least 15, especially before venturing outdoors during these hours.
Get immunized: Vaccination against Hepatitis B should be regularly administered, as this infection could lead to liver cancer.
Healthy practices: Sexually transmitted diseases like human papilloma virus infection, hepatitis B and HIV can lead to an increased incidence of various cancers. It is thus important to practice safe sex by using condoms, limit the number of sexual partners, or abstain from sex and never share needles. In case of drug addiction, it is important to seek help.
Get screened: Regular screening and self-examination for certain cancers helps in early detection of cancer and improves the prognosis.

Recent times have seen an increase in the incidence of cancer. Tobacco and tobacco products, particularly, cigarettes and pan masala are the biggest risk factors for incidence of cancer and lakhs of people in the country die every year due to Cancer alone. It is high time, the matter is taken up seriously by all those concerned in order to prevent the menace.

When my father had a toothache, he saw a dentist in Boston who recommended a root canal and dental crown costing about $2,000. He decided to wait until he was in India, his native land, for holidays and had the procedure done there for $200. Extremely satisfied with the service and the price, my mother decided to have her two front teeth replaced, eliminating a wide gap that tarnished her smile, and estimated she had saved $3,000. According to Deloitte consulting services, 875,000 Americans like my parents were medical tourists in 2010, traveling outside U. S. borders to receive health care: dental work, elective hip replacements, even bypass surgery. Courtesy: Manoj Jain MD MPH.
