मध्यप्रदेष के सागर नगर में आधुनिक कत्लखाना खोलने का प्रावधान
अहिंसक समाज का अपमान और राजनैतिक षडयंत्र

KFC AND SUBWAY TO GO VEGETARIAN IN GUJARAT

Ahmedabad : In Gujarat, global restaurant chains like Subway, KFC and McDonalds are not just experimenting with vegetarian food but also offering Jain food. In a first, American restaurant franchise Subway has opened a Jain counter at its first all-veg outlet in Ahmedabad at a location with a high density of Jain population. According to Durlabh Singh the Subway's development agent, "We carried out a survey in Gujarat and sent a proposal to the US HQ to open an all-veg outlet with a pure Jain counter in Ahmedabad. We will now add more vegetarian items on the menu in Gujarat, which is the only state that contributes 60% of the total sales from vegetarian food". The company's first all vegetarian counter was opened at a private university in Punjab recently, after which the restaurant chain decided to experiment with the Jain cuisine for Gujarat. The food chain is planning to open similar outlets in Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Anand, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar. McDonalds too is working out the logistics of setting up all-vegetarian outlets in Gujarat state. When KFC entered Gujarat in November 2011 with its first restaurant, it changed its menu to include vegetarian cuisine as well. KFC plans to add five more stores in the state this year with increased vegetarian options. Pizza Hut made its Gujarat foray with its first vegetarian restaurant in the world in Ahmedabad, offering Jain food. Pizza outlet Domino's Pizza also has four restaurants in Gujarat, which offer completely vegetarian menu. Source : CA Siddharth Parakh, E-Mail : sidparakh@yahoo.co.in

SIGN PETITION TO STOP ELEPHANT SLAUGHTER - LEONARDO DICAPRIO

March 1, 2013, Dear friends across India,
Across Africa, elephants are being slaughtered by poachers in record numbers -- and their tusks hacked off with chainsaws -- to make luxury items, statues and trinkets in Asia. But in days, Thailand will host a key global summit on illegal trade in endangered species, giving us a rare chance to stop this futile massacre.

Thailand is the world’s largest unregulated ivory market and a top driver of the illegal trade. They’ve been in the hot seat for years, yet so far little has been done to clamp down on their role in the elephant attack. But Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has just announced that she is considering a full ivory ban. That's why we started a global petition on the Avaaz site, to give this campaign the last push it needs to win. This is the best chance we’ve had in years to have a meaningful victory for Africa’s elephants -- we just need to put people power behind it. Join me now to stop the bloody ivory trade. Sign the urgent petition and share it with everyone: www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_elephants/?bqMlHbb&v=22512

It’s heartbreaking to hear conservationists use the term ‘killing frenzy’ to describe the scale of elephant poaching right now -- it’s the worst it's been in over 2 decades. Exploiting a legal loophole that allows the sale of ivory from Thailand’s domestic elephants, criminals smuggle in illegally obtained African ivory, mix it in with domestic sources so no one can tell them apart, then get away with selling it on the open market. But there is serious pressure on Thailand to act, before the 10-day UN summit on endangered species begins in Bangkok. Now is the time for us to act to shut down the Thai Ivory trade and set a ripple effect across Asia, forcing other countries to confront their illegal ivory trade as well. Join me now to turn up the heat on the Thai government and strike a blow against the ivory trade. Together we can win this. Help me reach 1 million before the meeting with PM Shinawatra in days. Sign and share with friends and family:

www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_elephants/?bqMlHbb&v=22512

Across the world's cultures and throughout our history elephants have been revered in religions and have captured our imagination -- Babar, Dumbo, Ganesh, Airavata, Erawan. That these beautiful and highly intelligent creatures are being annihilated is a tragedy, but today we can right that wrong.

With hope and determination, Leonardo DiCaprio, with the Avaaz team SIGN THE PETITION

MAKE SUPPLIERS RESPONSIBLE FOR NUCLEAR DISASTERS

Make suppliers responsible for nuclear disasters. - Take action now. Who pays for a nuclear disaster? It’s a question we raised three years ago and secured a strong supplier liability clause in the Nuclear Liability Act in our country. Now Japan is raising the same question.

Sadly, it has come two years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster. GE, Toshiba and Hitachi who built and serviced the nuclear reactors in Fukushima have managed to walk away without paying a dime for the nuclear accident. The cost of the Fukushima nuclear disaster is now being paid by the people of Japan. People all over the world are gathering support for a law that holds suppliers responsible for nuclear accidents. You helped put pressure on the Indian Government to implement a strong supplier liability clause in the Nuclear Liability Act. Your support to this worldwide movement for stringent supplier liability will be invaluable. Show your support for a strong nuclear liability law. Help Japan hold its suppliers responsible for the Fukushima disaster.

CLICK HERE - An official government review found that faulty equipment had a major role to play in the Fukushima accident, which was triggered by the tsunami. So GE, Toshiba and Hitachi are indeed responsible for what happened in Fukushima. Yet they have been able to walk away from their responsibility. This is unfair and unjust. Hundreds of thousands of people in Japan lost their homes, jobs and communities. None of them have received enough compensation to rebuild their lives. A strong supplier liability provision like that in India, would have made these companies act more responsibly. We have made India the only country with a strong nuclear supplier liability clause that makes nuclear suppliers liable in case of an accident. Let’s help the people of Japan get justice too.

EUROPIAN UNION BANS COSMETICS WITH ANIMAL TESTED INGREDIENTS

BRUSSELS : European Union regulators announced a ban on the import and sale of cosmetics containing ingredients tested on animals and to pledge more efforts to push other parts of the world, like China, to accept alternatives. The European Union banned animal testing of finished cosmetic products in 2004.

A second ban, on animal-tested ingredients, went into effect four years ago. But heavy lobbying by major cosmetics manufacturers resulted in an extension of the deadline for some tests for effects like allergies and cancer and for which there is still no substitute. Recent action eliminated those remaining exemptions. Even before the new rule was officially announced, the cosmetics company L’Oréal, which is based in France, said it would respect the ban and “no longer sell in Europe any finished product with an ingredient that was tested on animals”. But other representatives of the European industry, worth about €70 billion, or $91 billion, annually, criticized the commission for putting the ban into effect before alternatives existed for some of the most complex tests. “Europe’s idea is to put more pressure on other parts of the world to end animal testing, but the science doesn’t match that political timetable,” said Colin Mackay, a spokesman for Cosmetics Europe, a trade association. The global divergence in safety rules could also mean that companies sell the same product globally, but market one version for countries like China backed up by safety evidence from animal tests, and another version for Europe backed up by evidence from alternative tests. The question for India is, "If Europe can do this…why can’t India…a country of origin of an idea of Ahinsa". Source : Atul Doshi, E-Mail : atul@ahaholdings.co.in

SUPREME COURT-NOT NECESSARY TO “CLASSIFY ALL NON LIFE-SAVING DRUGS AND COSMETICS AS VEGETARIAN AND NON VEGETARIAN

March 12, 2013, New Delhi: The Supreme Court has set aside a Delhi High Court order asking the government to amend the rules to classify all non life-saving drugs and cosmetics as vegetarian and non-vegetarian with 'V' and 'NV' labels, respectively. The High Court had in November last directed the central government to amend its rules to mark drugs and cosmetics with V and NV labels in spite of the Centre's contention that it was not desirable to do so in public interest. The court had asked the Centre to exempt lifesaving drugs from carrying these labels. It was acting on a PIL that sought to press upon the right of a citizen to know the ingredients of all drugs and cosmetics. A Supreme Court bench last week set aside the High Court order, saying the rules do not envisage this. It also noted that an expert body had advised against it.

Justices GS Singhvi and SJ Mukhpadhaya, in their order, said it was not an area that was left uncovered by the law and hence the High Court could not have directed the executive to exercise its power to change a law. Opposing the labels, the Centre had said that if you accept that a citizen has the right to know the origins of a drug or cosmetic, a vegetarian could also claim information about the origin of a vegetarian ingredient, depending upon his food habit. "Food habit in India varies from person to person and place to place. Religion also plays a vital role.... Those who follow 'Jainism' are vegetarian but many of them don't eat some vegetarian food such as potato, carrot, onion, garlic, etc, grown below the earth. Majority treat 'honey' and 'lactose' as vegetarian but scientists treat them as 'non-vegetarian products'," it said. Also, there are 'egg-etarian' who eat egg but no meat or fish. "Even amongst non-vegetarians, a large number of persons do not take beef or ham/pork because of religious belief-...many non-vegetarians do not eat snakes, insects, frog or bird," the Centre said. It will be difficult to specify the origin of a 'vegetarian' or 'non-vegetarian' ingredient, if a person wants to know its definite origin to suit his food habit. TEMPLES

SUPREME COURT STAYS KUNDALPUR TEMPLE RESTORATION AT ASI REQUEST

20 MARCH 2013, New Delhi, Efforts to restore a seventh century Jain temple situated at Kundalpur hills in Madhya Pradesh have been stalled by the Supreme Court on an assertion by the Archaeological Survey of India that the structure was an ancient monument. Relying on a 1913 notification, ASI claimed to own the property and demanded immediate stoppage of all construction and restoration work carried out in and around the structure by a private trust. But the need for apex court’s intervention arose after this demand of ASI was rejected by the Madhya Pradesh High Court on September 17 last year. For the present, the apex bench of Justices S. S. Nijjar and P. C. Ghose has ordered status quo and directed the MP government and the private trust Sri Digambar Jain Atishay Kshetra Kundalpur Public Trust, to file their response.

The concern of the ASI was two-fold. Gazette notifications of July 16, 1913 and November 30, 1914 declared the temple a protected monument vesting supervision and control powers with the Central government. The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1958 retained the existing list of protected monuments without any change. As a result, the Digambar Jain temple or the Bade Baba Jain Temple continued to be an ancient monument of national importance. But the High Court order set this position at naught by recognizing the state’s legal control over the temple under the Madhya Pradesh Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1964. ASI has argued that this position was contrary to the Constitutional scheme that does not permit a state law to operate in a field already occupied by a Central law. The second concern of ASI had more to do with the damage to the structure and the surrounding environmental as part of the construction and restoration undertaken by the private trust. By an order of April 5, 1999 the state government allowed the private trust to manage and operate the affairs of the temple. Work started on constructed of new structures close to the old temple building and in 2006 the deity was shifted out from the old temple complex. An ASI team on inspection reported gross violations.

Under the ASI Rules, construction is barred within 300 metres of the protected structure. The ASI wrote to the state government to take immediate steps to remove heavy machinery and take action against the trust for felling trees, digging hills, and making alterations in the walls and sculptures inside the temple. As no action was forthcoming, the ASI approached the High Court accusing the state government of turning a blind eye to the ruin of a protected monument.

JAIN HERITAGE: MANGALORE TEMPLE STANDS TALL, THROUGH YEARS

Mangalore, A few kilometres off National Highway 75 near Mani, Arekallu village, still holds on to a Jain Temple, a vestige of a local feudatory. The private place of worship, whose curiously-designed façade — with incongruous murals of British soldiers pointing at the doorway — faces the Netravati, which during this season is more rock than water. Amarnath Arekallu, who comes from a long line of landlords, traces the history of the temple to 1918 after the death of his grandmother.

The Jain temple on the banks of Netravati at Kade shivalaya village, near Mani, in Dakshina Kannada, was unaffected by the severe floods in 1922 and 1975. Photo: H. S. Manjunath

“The land was put in her name by her mother, and after the death, my grandfather believed that the government will take over the property. To convince his mother-in-law into transferring the land to his name, he promised to construct a Jain temple, though they were the only family there,” said Mr. Arekallu. His grandfather, Ammu Pandiwal, personally designed the temple, the whole structure of which still stands today. The land was previously a low hill that was levelled out, and this is visible in the commanding height over the river at which the temple stands. Twelve monolithic stone pillars are in the temple, and Mr. Arekallu says they were gotten from a village near Karkala, while the panchaloha (five metal alloy) idol of the 16th Tirthankar Shantinath was made by a relative there. The gopura stands at over 30 feet, while the sanctum sanctorum stands at around 20 feet, and so far has only received renovations inside, and a recoating of paint.

Mr. Arekallu is also flummoxed by the appearance of two British soldiers, both on a horse with a military-standard hat and a sash, close to the gate. “I do not know for certain, but I think it’s to appease the British so that they do not destroy the monument,” he said. Opposite the temple is a house — built at the same time as the temple though it looks centuries old — where the priest Pujya Padayendra and his wife Chakreshwari have been living for the past 18 years, while the priesthood post has been in the family for over 78 years. With the temple remaining unaffected through severe floods in 1922 and 1975, the place assumed greater religious importance for locals from other religions too, he said. Mr. Arekallu said newly-wed couples place a vow before the deity and donate saris, and those who seek repentance give a garland to the deity and perform a puja.

JAIN SADHVI MOLESTED BY NEIGHBOUR, ONE HELD

18th March 2013, Bhind: A Jain Sadhvi was allegedly molested and assaulted by her neighbour after she was kidnapped from her father's house at Mau town in the district by unidentified persons.

The incident occurred on March 18 when unidentified persons abducted the Sadhvi from her father's house and took her to the place of one Ashok Dhobi who stays nearby, they said. Dhobi was arrested later for alleged molestation and brutal assault on the Sadhvi who suffered three fractures and is said to be in a serious condition. Meanwhile, a Jain Samaj spokesperson expressed concern over the brutal attack. "I have forwarded a letter to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan through the Naib Tahsildar regarding the incident", said the spokesperson, Lalit Jain. Dhobi has been booked under various IPC sections pertaining to molestation, abduction, attempt to murder and criminal intimidation. "We will spare none and soon arrest the remaining culprits involved in the incident", said IG (Chambal range). The Jain Community has reacted very strongly against this unfortunate incident. They want sternest possible action against all the culprits by the local administration. In the words of community leader Siddharth, It is deeply, deeply harrowing to hear of this incident. Manish says, I am sure the culprits will be punished duly. The Jain community in MP is very strong. They will ensure that the culprits are booked under law and meet the most stringent punishment. As we know, the punishment for rape in India under the new law is very, very strict. So we can expect life imprisonment for the two culprits.

JOGINDER PAL JAIN WINS MLA SEAT FROM MOGA CONSTITUENCY

March 01, 2013, Punjab's ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance won the high-stakes Moga assembly by-election on with SAD nominee Joginder Pal Jain defeating Congress candidate Vijay Kumar Sathi. While Jain polled 69,269 votes, Sathi fetched 50,420 votes. Ravinder Singh Dhaliwal of the People's Party of Punjab (PPP) was a distant third with 7,401 votes.

With this victory, Joginder Jain completed a hat-trick from Moga, having won in the 2007 and 2012 assembly polls on the Congress ticket. The February 23 by-election was necessitated by then sitting Congress MLA Jain's defection to the SAD in December last year. Justifying the switchover, Jain had claimed to have done it for the sake of Moga's development as the constituency had been neglected by the ruling alliance during his tenure as Congress MLA. Apart from Sukhbir, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Cabinet Minister Bikram Singh Majithia and MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal aggressively canvassed for Joginder Jain. Jain not only won from Moga for the third consecutive time but also recorded his biggest victory margin. After wining, Joginder Pal Jain said, "There was virtually no development in Moga over the past several years because the elected representative remained in the opposition. So, I took a historic decision (of joining SAD) for the sake of development of my area. I will dedicate myself to the constituency's development till my last breath".

WORLD LEADERS, SIKH, JAIN, MUSLIMS RELIGIOUS LEADERS TO ATTEND INSTALLATION OF NEW POPE

Vatican City, Mar 19: Among the VIPs expected is the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, Bartholomew I, who will become the first patriarch from the Istanbul-based church to attend a papal investiture since the two branches of Christianity split nearly 1,000 years ago.

His presence underscores the broad hopes for ecumenical and interfaith dialogue in this new papacy given Francis' namesake, St. Francis of Assisi, and his own history. Francis may well map out some of his own priorities in his installation Mass, which aside from 132 official delegations is expected to draw scores of Jewish, Orthodox and other Christian representatives. Italian news reports say civil protection officials are gearing up for as many as 1 million people to flock to the event. Francis will receive each of the government delegations in St. Peter's Basilica after the Mass, and then hold an audience with the ecumenical groups.

The Vatican released details of Francis' installation Mass, saying it would be a simplified version of the 2005 installation Mass that brought Pope Benedict XVI to the papacy, with only a half-dozen cardinals pledging their obedience to him and many gestures to Eastern rite Catholics and Orthodox Christians in a sign of church unity. Six sovereign rulers, 31 heads of state, three princes and 11 heads of government will be attending, the Vatican. More than a half-dozen Latin American presidents are attending, a sign of the significance of the election for the region. Francis has made clear he wants his pontificate to be focused on the poor, a message that has resonance in a poverty-stricken region that counts 40 percent of the world's Catholics. In all, some 33 Christian delegations will be present, as well as representatives of Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain communities.

THE SWASTIKA IN JAIN RELIGION IS SYMBOL OF TIRTHANKARA SUPARSVA

It is a symbol of the seventh Jina (Saint), the Tirthankara Suparsva. It consist of two parts. One part includes the Red and Blue part of the image. All other religions believe in this part only. But Swastik in Jainism includes 3 dots and a crescent moon with a dot also.

Four arms of Swastika symbolizes the four Gati (destiny) of worldly souls (non-liberated): Narakvasi (hellish beings), Triyanch (animals, birds, plants), Manushya (humans) and DEV (heavenly beings). It represents the perpetual nature of the universe in the Madhyalok (material world), where a creature is destined to one of those states based on their Karmas (deeds). It reminds us that worldly souls undergo a continuous cycle of birth, suffering, and death in these four forms. Hence one should follow the true religion and be liberated from suffering. It also represents the four columns of the Jain Sangh (community): Sadhus, Sadhvis, Shravaks and Shravikas - monks, nuns, female and male laymen. It also represents the four characteristics of the soul: infinite knowledge (Anant Gyan), infinite perception (Anant Darshan), infinite happiness (Anant Sukh), and infinite energy (Anant Virya). The green dots represent the Triratna (Jain Trinity: three jewels of jainism): Samyak Darshan (Right Faith), Samyak Gyan (Right Knowledge) and Samyak Charitra (Right Conduct) which together lead to liberation. This gives the message that it is necessary to have Triratna in order to attain Moksha. The Crescent moon and the dot i.e. the yellow part of the image represents the abode of the liberated souls (Siddha - Loka or Siddhashila or Moksha) which is a zone beyond the three realms (loks). All of the Siddhas (liberated bodyless souls) reside on this forever, liberated from the cycle of life and death. In the Svetambar Jain tradition, it is also one of the symbols of the ashta-mangalas. It is considered to be one of the 24 auspicious marks and the emblem of the seventh arhat of the present age. All Jain temples and holy books must contain the swastika and ceremonies typically begin and end with creating a swastika mark several times with rice around the altar.

WARREN BUFFETT SAYS SHAREHOLDERS "BOW DEEPLY WHEN YOU SEE AJIT JAIN"

New York, March 3: Describing Ajit Jain as one of Berkshire Hathaway’s terrific managers, billionaire investor Warren Buffett has said that Ajit Jain insures risks that “no one else has the desire or the capital to take on”. Showering accolades, Buffett asked shareholders to “bow deeply” if they happen to see Jain at the annual meeting. India-origin Ajit Jain, who has been associated with Buffett for nearly three decades, has long been speculated to be a potential candidate to succeed the octogenarian investor at Berkshire Hathaway. Ajit Jain runs the Reinsurance Group, one of the most profitable ventures of the conglomerate. Noting that Berkshire’s outstanding economics exist only because of some terrific managers, Buffett said that Jain insures risks that no one else has the desire or the capital to take on. Starting from 1985, Ajit Jain has created an insurance business with float of $35 billion and a significant cumulative underwriting profit, a feat that no other insurance CEO has come close to matching, the famed investor noted.

SANMATITARKA PRAKARANA - An exhaustive Hindi Commentary on Acarya Siddhasena Divakara by Acarya Jayasundara Suri. Prefaced by Acharya Bhuvanabhanu Suri - Acharya Siddhasena Divakara, a Jain ascetic accepted by both traditions of Jainism - the Digambaras and the Shvetambaras - as their own, lived in the early years of the Common Era. He was believed to be the teacher of King Vikramaditya, on whom the Vikrama Samvat calendar is based.

He was a profound thinker and logician. One of his most important works, the SANMATI-TARKA occupies a place of honour amongst works on Indian philosophy and formal logic. It is the only Indian work on formal logic to be composed in Prakrit. Sanmatitarka is a key Jain text for the exposition of syādvāda {doctrine of multi-sidedness}, anekāntavāda {the multiplicity of reality}, and the seven viewpoints, shedding light on the epistemology and ontology behind Jainism's syādvāda. The original text was composed in 167 verses. It is accompanied by a Sanskrit gloss of 25000 verses composed by Acarya Abhayadeva who lived in the tenth century CE. And a modern Hindi commentary based on the original text and gloss, running into 75000 verses. The entire work has been made accessible to all through this exhaustive Hindi commentary composed by Acarya Jayasundara suri who spent over 31 years composing this extraordinarily detailed and elaborate Hindi commentary. The text along with the commentary has been beautifully published in a set of 5 volumes. The set is printed on special quality lightweight paper which is expected to last over 500 years. COMMUNITY QUESTION

Dhanpal Jain, E-Mail : dhanpal.jain@gmail.com , Why is there no member of the Jain minority community in the Union Cabinet, when we have adequate Muslim, Sikh, Christian,Buddhist minority representatives in the Union Cabinet. The Jain community must question the Prime Minister's & his Government fairness and inclusiveness agenda, as the Jains are excluded for the Union Cabinet & other vital position's in the Government. In Nehru's Cabinet, there were three to Four Jains, as the cabinet Ministers. Check out about his. This shows greatness of that Man, who was not only a true visionary or nationalist, but saw that every section of Indian Society was represented in a Secular, democratic India. Yet the Union Cabinet has not granted National Minority Status to Jain community. Source : Disha Mehta.
