Pujya Gurudev Shri Fulchand ji Shastri

Information Compiled by: CA  Anil K Jain ( caindia@hotmail.com )

Life Dedicated to Self-Realization, Spiritual Awakening and Service to Humanity

Pujya Gurudev Shri Fulchandji Shastri, also known as Fulchand Kishorbhai Hejam, is an Indian spiritual teacher, author and speaker associated with the Jain philosophical tradition and, in particular, the teachings of Shrimad Rajchandra and Pujya Gurudev Shri Kanji Swami. He is the founder of Adhyatmik Sadhana Kendra (ASK), Umarala, Gujarat, an institution established for spiritual study, Self-realization, disciplined sadhana and humanitarian service. His spiritual message centres upon a profound yet universal question: Who am I? Beyond the identities created by name, body, profession, nationality, social position and material circumstances, he encourages seekers to investigate the nature of the Self and to understand the distinction between the transient material world and the eternal conscious soul.

Early Life and Spiritual Inclination

According to his official biography, Shri Fulchandji Shastri was born on 25 July 1981 at Umarala in Gujarat, into the family of Shri Kishor Bapuji and Shrimati Nirmala Mataji. His official account describes an environment deeply influenced by religion and spirituality and states that his grandparents, Shri Shyamdev Swami and Shrimati Ratnadevi, were spiritual figures. His biography records signs of a strong inclination towards spirituality from childhood. Rather than regarding religion merely as ritual or inherited belief, he gradually became absorbed in questions concerning the soul, attachment, detachment, karma, liberation and the purpose of human existence. This orientation eventually developed into an intensive study of Jain philosophy and spiritual literature.

Education and Study of Jain Philosophy

Shri Fulchandji pursued specialised study of Jain philosophy and scriptures. He obtained the qualification of Pandit from Shri Pandit Todarmal Digamber Jain Siddhant College, Jaipur, and the qualification of Shastri through Rajasthan University, Jaipur, according to his official biography. Dr. Hukamchand Bharill is identified in his biographical material as an important guide during his formal religious studies. His scholarship became particularly associated with subjects such as Samyak Darshan (Right Faith or Right Vision), the nature of the soul, karma, Self-realization and Moksha (liberation). For him, however, scriptural knowledge is not intended to remain an intellectual exercise. His teaching repeatedly directs the seeker from the study of words towards personal spiritual inquiry. Scripture provides the map; spiritual awareness requires the individual to undertake the journey.

Beginning His Spiritual Discourses

His official biography states that Shri Fulchandji began delivering spiritual discourses at the age of sixteen. Over the subsequent years, teaching and spiritual communication became a central part of his life. His discourses explore Jain scriptures as well as fundamental questions of human existence: What is the nature of the soul? Why does attachment create suffering? What is the difference between the Self and the body? What is genuine detachment? How can knowledge move from intellectual understanding to inner realization? A substantial archive of his discourses has been made available through his organisation's digital platforms, enabling seekers who cannot personally visit Umarala to study his teachings.

Devotion to Shrimad Rajchandra and Kanji Swami

Two towering spiritual influences occupy a particularly important place in Shri Fulchandji's spiritual orientation: Param Krupalu Dev Shrimad Rajchandra and Pujya Gurudev Shri Kanji Swami. Shrimad Rajchandra (1867–1901), the Jain mystic, philosopher and poet, placed extraordinary emphasis on direct knowledge of the Self. His celebrated Atma Siddhi Shastra systematically examines fundamental spiritual truths concerning the existence and eternity of the soul, karma, liberation and the path leading towards it. Shri Fulchandji has devoted substantial effort to explaining and disseminating these teachings. His work consequently combines reverence for the Jain scriptural tradition with an emphasis upon personal spiritual experience.

The Central Message: Self-Realization

At the heart of Shri Fulchandji's teachings lies Atma Gyaan — knowledge of the Self. Human beings ordinarily identify themselves with their bodies, possessions, relationships, social status, achievements, failures, pleasures and sufferings. Jain spiritual philosophy asks the seeker to investigate whether these changing circumstances constitute the true Self. The body changes. Thoughts change. Circumstances change. Wealth and possessions come and go. Social identities are acquired and abandoned. Yet consciousness—the knowing principle—is treated in this philosophical tradition as fundamentally distinct from material existence. Thus, Shri Fulchandji's teachings encourage an inward movement: from possession to awareness, from external identity to Self-knowledge, and from attachment to detachment. His spiritual approach can therefore be understood not simply as an invitation to practise religion, but as an invitation to examine one's own consciousness.

Adhyatmik Sadhana Kendra, Umarala

An important milestone in his public spiritual work was the establishment of Adhyatmik Sadhana Kendra (ASK) at Umarala, Gujarat, on 25 July 2009. The Kendra was conceived as a centre where serious aspirants could pursue spiritual study and sadhana in an environment conducive to introspection, discipline and detachment. Its activities extend beyond spiritual discourses. According to the organisation, ASK is a non-profit institution and has also undertaken social-welfare activities for economically disadvantaged residents of the surrounding area. These have included distribution of food grains, clothing, hygiene necessities and educational materials. This combination of spirituality and service reflects an important principle associated with Shri Fulchandji's work: spiritual development should not produce indifference towards human suffering.

One of the mottos attributed to him expresses this succinctly: “Humanity before Spirituality.” Another is: “Connection before Correction.”

Together, these ideas suggest that genuine spiritual guidance begins with compassion and human connection rather than judgment.

Gyaan Deepak and Dedicated Spiritual Practice

The Adhyatmik Sadhana Kendra has also served as a base for a more intensive programme of spiritual practice associated with Gyaan Deepak Prajwalan. According to ASK, the programme was formally initiated on 1 January 2018 for aspirants wishing to undertake sustained spiritual practice directed towards Self-realization. The aspiration behind such an initiative is significant. Instead of treating spirituality as an occasional activity conducted alongside everyday material pursuits, it creates an environment in which spiritual realization itself becomes the principal objective of life. This represents a demanding conception of sadhana: knowledge is not merely to be accumulated; it is to transform perception, conduct and ultimately one's understanding of the Self.

Author and Interpreter of Spiritual Literature

Shri Fulchandji is also a prolific writer. His official biography states that he has authored more than forty books dealing with Self-realization, spirituality, Jain philosophy and vegetarianism, with works available in Hindi, Gujarati and English. His published works and explanations include subjects associated with Atma Siddhi Shastra, Samaysaar, Self-realization and Jain philosophy. His literary contribution is important because philosophical concepts such as soul, karma, bondage, right faith and liberation can be highly technical. Interpretation and explanation make these ideas accessible to contemporary readers who may not possess specialised knowledge of traditional Jain philosophical vocabulary. Through books as well as discourses, his work attempts to bridge the distance between ancient spiritual literature and the questions faced by modern individuals.

Taking the Message Beyond India

A distinctive feature of Shri Fulchandji's mission has been its international orientation. His organisational biography describes extensive overseas spiritual travel and efforts to communicate the teachings of Shrimad Rajchandra internationally. It also records participation in Jain gatherings abroad, including events connected with Jain organisations in the United States. His work has therefore sought to present Jain spirituality not simply as the cultural inheritance of a particular community, but as a philosophy whose fundamental questions—the nature of consciousness, suffering, attachment, ethical conduct and liberation—can be contemplated by people from different backgrounds. This universal orientation is particularly relevant in the modern world. Although technology has made societies increasingly interconnected, many people continue to struggle with anxiety, material competition, dissatisfaction and questions of meaning. Spiritual traditions centred upon self-examination consequently continue to attract interest far beyond their geographical origins.

Vegetarianism, Ahimsa and Compassion

Another important dimension of Shri Fulchandji's message is vegetarianism and non-violence.Within Jain philosophy, Ahimsa is not merely a social virtue. It emerges from a deeper understanding of the existence and value of living beings. Compassion consequently becomes an expression of spiritual awareness. His organisation states that his discourses have encouraged thousands of individuals to adopt vegetarianism. While such figures originate from the organisation itself, they illustrate the importance that ethical eating and compassion towards living beings occupy within his teaching. His advocacy of vegetarianism can therefore be understood as part of a broader spiritual ethic: inner development should find expression in one's everyday choices and one's relationship with other forms of life.

Spirituality and Social Responsibility

An especially meaningful aspect of Shri Fulchandji's philosophy is the connection between spiritual pursuit and social responsibility. A spiritual institution can easily become inward-looking, concentrating exclusively on meditation, scripture and personal liberation. The activities described by Adhyatmik Sadhana Kendra demonstrate an attempt to combine these pursuits with assistance to people experiencing material hardship. Education, food assistance and support for local families represent the practical side of this philosophy. The underlying message is powerful: the search for one's own soul need not diminish sensitivity towards another person's suffering. Indeed, compassion towards others can become part of the process through which spiritual understanding is expressed.

Teacher, Motivator and Spiritual Guide

Shri Fulchandji's appeal also derives from his role as a communicator. Traditional philosophy often employs terminology that can appear difficult to people unfamiliar with scriptures. A spiritual teacher therefore has the additional responsibility of translating philosophical principles into language relevant to contemporary life. Through lectures, spiritual camps, books, recordings and digital communication, Shri Fulchandji has attempted to make profound questions accessible to a wider audience. His role consequently extends across several dimensions: spiritual teacher, interpreter of scripture, author, motivational speaker and institutional founder. Yet these activities ultimately converge upon one central purpose—the awakening of the individual towards Self-knowledge.

Extraordinary Claims in His Traditional Biography

Accounts published by Shri Fulchandji's organisation and followers also attribute extraordinary spiritual and intellectual abilities to him. These include exceptional recall of a very large body of scriptures, Jaati Smaran Gyaan—described in Jain spiritual terminology as recollection of previous births—and unusual multilingual abilities. Such accounts form an important part of the devotional biography surrounding him. They should appropriately be understood as claims and spiritual testimonies recorded by his organisation and followers, rather than as facts independently established by academic or scientific investigation. From a biographical perspective, however, their significance lies in illustrating the manner in which his followers understand his spiritual personality and authority.

A Mission Rather Than Merely an Institution

Perhaps the most appropriate way of understanding Shri Fulchandji's work is through the concept of a mission. Buildings, organisations, publications and discourses are visible manifestations of that mission. Its deeper objective is internal: awakening the individual to the possibility that lasting peace cannot be secured merely through accumulation in the external world. Material development has an important place in human life, but spiritual traditions remind humanity that external progress and internal fulfilment are not necessarily the same thing. In Shri Fulchandji's teachings, the decisive transformation therefore occurs when attention begins to move from “What do I possess?” towards “Who am I?” That change of question represents the beginning of spiritual inquiry.

Legacy and Continuing Relevance

Pujya Gurudev Shri Fulchandji Shastri represents a contemporary expression of an ancient Indian spiritual tradition. Rooted in Jain philosophy and inspired particularly by Shrimad Rajchandra and Kanji Swami, his work combines scriptural study, spiritual discourse, authorship, institutional development, ethical living and humanitarian service. Through Adhyatmik Sadhana Kendra at Umarala, his books and his extensive body of discourses, he has sought to create opportunities for seekers to engage seriously with questions concerning the soul and Self-realization. In an age characterised by unprecedented material advancement, instant communication and continuous external stimulation, the fundamental questions addressed by spiritual philosophy have not disappeared. If anything, they have acquired renewed importance:

Who am I beyond my body and social identity?
What produces genuine happiness?
Why does attachment lead to suffering?
What is the relationship between knowledge and experience?
Can a human being attain lasting inner freedom?

These are questions that have occupied Indian philosophical thought for millennia. The life and work of Pujya Gurudev Shri Fulchandji Shastri are dedicated to keeping that inquiry alive and encouraging individuals to search for its answer not merely in books or external institutions, but ultimately within the Self.
