Barrister Jugmandir Lal Jain (30-4-1881-13-7-1927)

Founder Central Jain Publishing House and Jain Library at London

 

Late Shri J. L. Jain was born at Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh in a rich Agarwal Jain family. He was Govt. scholarship holder in Matriculation and Intermediate examinations. He passed M.A. (English) in 1st Division from Allahabad University in 1902 and and served Lecturer in English Deptt. there for 3 years. He want to U. K. in 1906, studied at Oxford University and returned as Barrister in 1910.

He achieved much success in the legal profession and even went to London to plead a case before the Privy Council. He was appointed Justice of Indore High Court in 1914 on which position he worked upto 1927 with certain breaks (while away from Indore). He was honoured with the title of Rai Bahadur around 1920.

In spite of his busy life. Barrister Jain devoted much time to the study of Jain scriptures and literature. He alongwith Brahamchari Shital Prasad translated in English language Tatwartha Sutra, Atmanushasan, Panchastikayasar, Samayasar and Jiva-Karma Kand. He had also initiates translation of Gommatsar which was later completed by late Dr. Hira Lal Jain. He prepared a dictionary of Paribhashik Jain words. He got these works published with his self earned money. 'Jain Law' and 'Outlines of Jainism' written by him in English were published from London.

He edited Jain Gazette since its publication in 1904 till his death. He had established Central Jain Publishing House and Jain Library at London.

A year before his death at Indore he made a will for use of all his assets for religious and public welfare programmes. J. L. Jain Trust at Indore provides financial assistance to institutions and scholarships to deserving students.
