Dr. Narendra Kumar P. Jain

 

Former Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.Ambassador of India to EEC, Belgium, Luxembourg, Nepal, Mexico, Gautemala and EL Salvador and DY PR to UNO

 

Dr. Narendra P. Jain was born on 21st December, 1930. He was educated at the University of Bombay (India) and University of Cambridge (UK). He was a member of the Indian Foreign Service from April 1953 to April 1989 and during this span of 36 years, distinguished himself in a wide variety of key diplomatic assignments-both political and economic-abroad, and senior positions in the Government of India in New Delhi.

In the initial phase of his career, he served in Bangkok, Moscow and west Berlin as India's representative to the Economic Commission of Asia and Far East. In 1967, he joined the ministry of commerce as Director, looking after trade and economic relations with the Soviet Union and East European countries.

Between 1970-74, he was minister and Deputy permanent Representative of India to the United Nations in New York. He has represented India at several UN and other international conferences and meetings of the Nonaligned movement. Between 1974-79, he was joint secretary and later Additional secretary in the ministry of External Affairs.

He served as India's Ambassador to Kathmandu (Nepal) from 1979-82 and in Mexico, El Salvador and Gautemala from 1982-85. He was Secretary in the ministry of External Affairs from 1985-86 and looked after International Economic Relation and India's relations with South East Asia, Far East, Gulf, Middle East and Nepal. His last diplomatic assignment was as India's Ambassador to the European Economic Community (EEC) from October 1986 to April 1989.

The Mexican Academy of International Law and Diplomacy honoured Dr. jain with an honorard Doctorate in International Relations.

Dr. Jain was the Chief Guest at the world jain Congress held at Leicester in the UK in June, 1988. From time to time he has addressed jains abroad on jain religion and philosophy . He is member of the steering committee of the World forum of jains. He is also a well known scholar and poet and has brought out three collections of poems in Hindi and book on "Folktales of Mexico" in English. He is married to Rani jain and has one son and a daughter.
