History of Oswal Community

The community was created in the year 165 AD, at Osia town, a prospering state in Rajpitana at that time, All the inhabitants were Rajputs, taking meat and wines and indulging in all vices. The then king of that state was Uppaldev. His grown-up son suddenly lost his life due to snake bite and the king was greatly grieved. At the time, one Jain Muni, Acharya Ratn Prabh Suriji Maharaj was had arrived for a short stay in that town. The citizens, having heard of his yogic powers, approached him and requested him to give darshan to the prince and give him a new lease of life. The acharya accepted their request and assured that the prince could be alive once again provided all the citizens and the king and his family took a solemn vow, that they will henceforth not take meat or wine and they will lead a simple, honest and austere life. They went to the king Uppaldev and described all that was talked with the jain saint. The king readily agreed to the condition and all citizens also readily agreed.

The body of the prince was taken to the saint. By virtue of his yogic powers and mantras, he made the prince alive. Thus all people of Osia state accepted Jain religion, strictly observing the commandments and following the principles of satya, ahimsa, non-stealing and non-possession (aparigraha). All the people who accepted this faith were called ‘Oswals’, since they originated from Osia. Later on, they spread over the adjoining states and then in the whole country.

Acharya Parampara In Swetambar Jain Shraman Sangha
The Shraman Sangha was constituted at a congregation of Jain Saints and shrawaks held at Sadri in Rajasthan in the year 1992.
Most of the Sects accepted this formation anf joined the Shraman Sangha. However, all of them did not join mainly due to disparities in practices and codes of sadhu order. Thus, few still remained outside and they had their own separate order, with an acharya at the apex. The list of Acharyas so far is as follows:
