Shri Satish Kumar Jain

Social figure of national and international repute among the Jains, writer, journalist. Shri Satish Kumar Jain was born on October 22, 1930 in a rich and highly respectable family at Nehtaur in District Bijnore, Uttar Pradesh, India. He is devoted to internationalisation of Jainism, promotion of Jain culture and literature, vegetarianism and animal welfare and protection to the core of his heart.

M. A. (Economics) and L. L. B., he has throughout been a brilliant student and was knows as 'Child Prodigy' in early age. He very actively participated in the literary and debating activities at all levels of education.

He practised in legal profession at Bijnore during 1954-57. He joined service in Forestry Division of Ministry of Agriculture in 1957. He retired from Ministry of Environment & Forests as Consultant December 1987. A very sincere and hard working officer he was actively involved with formulation of Five Year Plans of Forestry Sector and various internationally assisted forestry projects (U. N. D. P., F. A. O., World Bank, USAID, Canadian, Swedish, British, German, Danish), wild life preservation, afforestation, implementation of Social Forestry, foreign training assignments, development of Indian forests etc.

Shri Jain is devoted and active social worker since 1958. Hw has been President of Jain Sabha New Delhi and Chairman of Jain School (a Senior Secondary School), the two prominent institutions of New Delhi for 8 years. He has made to grow these institutions considerably in the long time span of 38 year during which period he has been their Secretary, Vice-President and President. He continues to be very actively involved with the further growth of these institutions particularly construction of a new building at a cost of Rs. 3.00 crores, as a Senior Executive Committee Member.

He established the organisation Ahimsa International in 1973 as its Secretary General in which position he has been continuing still without interruption. This organisation, due to his hard and devoted work, is well known in the Jain community of India and various other countries of the world for Jaina internationalisation activities, mutual inter-action of world Jain leaders, promotion of non-violence (Ahimsa), Jain Cultural and literature and vegetarianism. World Jain Congress was established by him in 1985 as its Secretary General. He has successfully organised, assisted six World Jain Conferences in Siddhachalam, USA, Bangkok and Singapore as Secretary General of these two organisations.

He has instituted five annual awards and organised many national seminars to promote Ahimsa, Jainism, literature, journalism, vegetarianism and animal welfare. Many medical camps have been organised by him for service of the disabled and sick.

Shri Satish Kumar has visited U. S. A (extensively), Canada, U. K. France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Thailand and Singapore seven times to propagate the principles of Jainism and deliver lectures on subjects or Jainology. He has read papers at the Conventions of Jaina (Federation of Jain Associations of North America). His articles and photographs of Jain temples have been published in Jaina convention souvenirs and many India several times in official capacity and as tourist.

Shri Jain is a prolific writer on Jain archeology, Jain art, vegetarianism, Jainism, wildlife, forestry, economics matter, foreign travels and places of tourism in India. His over 300 reference articles on these subjects in Hindi and English have been published in leading literary periodicals and newspapers of India. His voluminous reference compilations in English and Hindi have become socially useful publications. His Hindi works have been very well received in literary circles and adequately reviewed in journals. He edited Ahimsa Voice, a standard research based 100 page bilingual (English & Hindi) journal for eleven years upto 1998.

Shri Satish Kumar jain is a respectful name among the Jain scholars and journalists for his literary genius and Jain literature promotion and scholars honouring activities. He is widely known among the Indian activists of animal welfare and vegetarianism.

He has been publicly honoured at large gatherings in U. S. A., U. K., Bangkok, Singapore and India many times for his dedicated and long social and literary services.

Shri Jains is a keen photographer and collector of stamps and coins. He has possibly the largest single man collection of excellent black and white photographs, colour photos and transparencies of Jain and Hindu temples, caves, pillars, icons and other structures, mostly snapped by him. These have been used in various publications.

Music and attendance of standard classical music and dance concerts is his yet one of the varied hobbies. He is a keen traveler.

Shri Jain is unbelievably hard working at the age of 72 years and while he is not having normal health for sometime. He is straight forward, highly social, polite and amenable. A person of great determination, organisation and action.

Married to Smt. Shanta Rani Jain in February 1957 in New Delhi, he has one engineer son Raiv Jain and one married daughter Madhulika Jain.

He has recently written a complete book on "Jainism, Its Literature, Art & Architecture & The Jains In Global Perspective" In English, covering almost every aspect of Jainism, of international standard. The book has about 150 black & white and colour quality illustrations of Jain temples in India and other countries and of Jain caves and icons in India.
